Description

The Mastermind GT is the result of years of research and development, using modern technology to create what we believe is the best MIDI foot controller ever made. It's popular with guitarists, DJs, keyboardists, producers and more. The Mastermind GT series is very popular with Kemper and Fractal Axe-Fx users, and we're also seeing quite a few users running it with Ableton, Logic and other DAW software.

By adding a display over every button, we've made it possible to have a fully configurable MIDI controller. Any button can be assigned to any function, and colors and button text are fully configurable by the user. Buttons can send multiple MIDI messages of several types, and there can be up to 16 pages of buttons so you will always have access to all of the functions your rig has available.

Add in other features such as user upgradeable firmware, USB thumb drive support and built-in support for many popular MIDI devices, and you can see why there has been so much buzz about this product.

Features:

  • 10 buttons, with an LCD display over every button. Any button can be set to perform any function (preset, IA, bank up/down, tap tempo, etc.) and the LCD will indicate what the button does. No more board tape!
  • A large main LCD display shows the preset number, preset name and/or song name
  • Standard MIDI In and Out ports
  • Phantom power capability allows you to run the Mastermind GT with a single MIDI cable - no separate power supply needed
  • More than one Mastermind GT can be connected together and used in multiple locations on stage
  • Jacks to connect four expression pedals and four external switches allow for lots of control over connected effects processors and other MIDI devices
  • Two auxilliary 9VDC power outlets for tuner, wah pedal, etc
  • USB support for direct connection to a PC or Mac
  • USB thumb drive input allows you to save and restore settings to a thumb drive
  • Editor software for PC and Mac
  • Advanced on-board editing capability which makes this controller very easy to program, even without using the editor software
  • Built for the rigors of the road with high quality components throughout

Specs:

  • Number of instant access buttons, preset buttons and bank size are all user definable - any button can be assigned to any function
  • 384 presets, 16 pages of buttons and 16 connected devices
  • Preset buttons can send a program change to all 16 devices with a single tap
  • IA buttons can send up to 10 messages (any combination of CC, PC or Note)

    Mastermind series

Posted by George Reiswig on Jan 24th 2024

I believe I purchased my GT16 Mastermind in 2012. I have used this unit on gigs ever since then, controlling difficult things on my AxeFX rig live, and in conjunction with Bandhelper using a bluetooth MIDI receiver. It has worked flawlessly...until this year.

Just recently, it stopped transmitting MIDI. I had a brief panic, since I had an audition coming up, and the company was responsive (as always) to my support requests. But it was clear that this was going to need some direct attention from them, so I sent it back for repair for the first time. 12 years after purchase, and under heavy use!

When I factor in the longevity of that unit, plus the support from the company, plus the functionality that (to my mind) has yet to be replicated by any other MIDI controller, it made my next choice easy:

In addition to paying to get the GT16 fixed, I was HAPPY to pay to order a new GT10 as well, for when the stage is smaller and maybe to help me tighten up some of my presets, too. I'll have two units, and although I don't think I'll need the redundancy (past performance is the best predictor of future performance and all), it's nice to know that I have it.

The company is great, the gear is great and dependable, and the fact that this is a unit that has lasted for 12 years of heavy use, being dropped, kicked, stepped on, having beer thrown at it...it is a testament to what products ought to be, and how a company ought to behave. Thank you!!

I contacted Sheri well over 10 years ago looking for something that wasn't available yet....She then told me about the upcoming Mastermind. Unfortunately, I wanted a solution sooner than later and found the Rocktron All Access to meet most of my needs.

Fast forward to current times, and I needed something for a different rig.....the Mastermind Gt series instantly caught my eye.

I can't think of a single thing this isn't capable of doing....they have covered all of the bases to bring forth one of the most powerful and customizable solutions ever, Built like a tank and....WOW. I love this. Thanks Ron and Sheri!

I'm a software guy, I wish there was some better documentation on the editor, but the tooltips will suffice. Very versatile, and I'm very pleased with this.

    GT/10

I got one of these to control an axefx 2 and paired it with a mission engineering ep-1 reversed polarity spring loaded pedal and this is hands down the most legit setup ever! It took a minute to set up how I wanted, but it was totally worth the time for how well it performed afterwards. The flexibility is the best part no doubt. The only thing that I feel like I need any time adjusting to is the lack of a click when a button is pressed since I was using an HX effects via midi to control the axefx prior, but that will come the more I use the GT. Either way, the unit is fantastic!
